The Country Family

Loungin’ out on the porch barefoot,

Grass is growin’ tall, time for a haircoot.

Trees are buddin’ leaves, my pants are buddin’ holes.

We’re hangin’ out together as time slowly roles.

The house is gettin’ old, the paint pealin’ away,

But all that, I’ll never forget this day.

Contagious

I just had the wonderful experience of going to Haiti on a missions trip. We visited a very nice girls’ orphanage administrated by a pastor’s wife. On two days at two different churches we held a women’s conference. I spoke on the necessity of reading God’s Word and what significance it has on our lives. I think the Christians of Haiti need to be grounded in the Word and know it for themselves. On Saturday, we went to a park with an older girl orphanage and played with children from another orphanage. It was a joy to see these poor children laughing and playing. On Sunday we went to one of the churches that we had the conference at. I had the opportunity to encourage some young people to not date while they are young, getting into bad relationships. A real problem in Haiti is unfaithful husbands and men and women living together unmarried. I hope that as the church grows and Christians learn the Bible, they will follow God’s way. On Monday we went up a windy road to a church on a mountain. There, the mountain children ministered to us in song, and we gave them food and other provisions.

Something that really stood out me on this trip, was the Haitians’ contagious laughter. So many so poor, but they can laugh. Boy! Can they laugh, and make me laugh too. Sometimes I would rattle something off in English and they would laugh hysterically. Or sometimes I would try to figure out what they were saying in Creole and they would laugh some more, with me joining in. Driving through the dusty streets, I often saw a group of people laughing together. It is so good to see such joy. It makes me wonder why we Americans who seem to have everything, don’t lighten up a little more.
