Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God (1 Samuel 30:6).
Before this David had moved to Ziklag in the land of the Philistines for a year and four months. After some time of living there with all his wives and children and those who followed him he went out to battle with the Philistines (but actually didn’t end up going to battle with the Philistines, because the lords didn’t agree with the idea. Go to 1 Samuel 29 to see the whole story). When he came back to Ziklag he found that the Amalekites had invaded it and burned it with fire taking all his possessions and wives and children.
You can imagine what a heartbreaking tragedy it would be to come back to. So the people decided to blame it all on David, and “spoke of stoning him”! But what did David do? He turned to God in his distress and got his strength from God instead of getting angry at God or at the people, who wanted to stone him.
This is such a great encouragement to us as we face everyday problems. When ever you are in distress, go to God. Strengthen yourself in Him. Pray. Read His Word. I can assure you He will help you.
There also comes a blessing when we strengthen ourselves in the Lord in time of distress. In David’s case he was able, by God’s hand, to destroy the camp of the Amalekites; capture his wives, children, and possessions; and get everyone else’s possessions, wives, and children.
“Now David was greatly distressed…But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”
